Most the arguments on that other site we attend. Folks are always saying that grappling is bad for SD and so is going to the ground. Like you said, you just dont have an option

I mean, I don't think it is the best strategy, but...If you're a super awesome grappler, do you wanna try and duke it out with a guy with a knife or put him on the ground and try and control the arm asap, which is basic strategy in any grappling art that uses submissions.

at the end of the day, and particularly when weapons are involved, prwventing the other guy from doing what he wants to do is what you need to do. and 90% of that involves some sort of grappling. then again, people are fucking dumb, and "grappling" HAS to be cuddling and groundwork, no exceptions. lol.

That's the thing, wwhen I was reading through this I thought "What are we talking about when we say grappling?" On Die Less Often these guys try and do double legs against Dog Brothers holding a knife, it isn't pretty. The basic technique that they then train is "the Dog Catcher". which is very much like wrestling which is very much like grappling. Here you are! From about 2 mins. not the DBs but...gives you a basic idea. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCrMlYrSQV0

I hate that "you can't do this, can't do that" crap in MA. Sometimes you just don't get a fucking choice and have to make do with what you are given and using the skills that you have. This. So much this. I would make a gi with this statement on it when I train if I thought I'd be allowed to wear it.

Not sure how i feel about that guys foot work. and would you be able to stick a onetwo onto someone with a plansa (blue worm)?
i guess you could use it if you drill it enough. is there something similar that comes up in dumog?

If you see the Die Less Often video, you'll see it being drilled and working. Plansa? Yeah, dumog has a lot of "arm wrestling" - Can't really describe it...wrenching the arm, pulling it down or up to off balance the guy, hitting into the elbow joint to drop the opponent down. And a lot of people use a two on one type thing. Admittedly a lot of dumog ends up with wrist locks and that. but like all kali, it's pretty free as to what you want to do or what other arts you can pull from. From about 2:15 will give you an idea of a basic / standard dumog technique but as Vu says, you need to put your strikes in. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6As1h54LKzc

Kinda reminded me of a thing I heard Geoff Thompson say years ago. When wrestling got a bit more popular due to the UFC etc, a lot of people from the TMA world said some of the take downs where you drop a knee to the floor were stupid as you can hurt or even destroy your knees. (Of course, the law of wrestling does state that you have to put your knee down and only do those techniques).
Geoff Thompson said something like "would you rather have a fucked up knee, or spend your life in hospital drinking food through a straw?". Bit dramatic (like the RBSD people) but yeah, basically.

Resisting the urge to say "I'd rather train in something with history if I were there" in the "Should I train in Japan?" thread.

Actually fair point bubba
I've had those same arguments about wrestling. Was told I'd get kicked or kneed before I got the takedown - the tae kwon do blackbelt who said that still didnt believe me when he was on the floor.
Another one is that a double leg would nt work if the guy is super heavy cos I wouldn't be able to pick him up. The picking bit is only done to land straight into a pin, most folks using it for MMA should be circling out or body locking.
Anyway back to the weapons stuff - the dog catcher looks exactly like the flinch reaction when people throw stuff at me or hit me with stuff so it would probably work as a refinement of that reaction.

I use two versions - one is the split arms (one up one down) and also the "shell" both up...i also call the shell the "riposte" because its a half beat reaction between the initial contact and the follow up
