I have a theory about ninjutsu.
So a common thing (elsewhere on the internet) is that there is no true ninjutsu guys outside of japan because hatsumi gives grades like candy. he does it to do this weird japanese sarcasm thing and to get people out of his hair. A complaint we here is that these folks only turn up to japan for a few days to grab a grade.
Well hatsumi trained with takumatsu on weekends. so what if takumatsu did the same thing as hatsumi to get him out of his hair too. and hatsumi actually sucks at ninja town and the suckage has been passed on.

That's so wonderful on so many levels I want to believe this is true without thinking about it For me, I think if you're gonna just give away grades, it's probably cos you just don't give enough of a shit. That always makes me wonder how far that goes. Whether or not Hatsumi actually gives that much of a shit about ninjutsu or if he's doing it for (say) the income.

I think the whole thing is a crock. Tiramisu or whatever he is called is a charlatan IMO, and Hatsumi is either going along with it all or he was totally suckered in - can't decide. Quite honestly, Hatsie comes across as a bit of a simpleton....Want to use a stronger un-PC word for that, but not sure if I can. I am not sure if he even knows what he is doing.

Reminds me. I lived and worked in Tokyo for a year. I trained at Nakia Yuki's Shooto/BJJ place. The company I was working for sent me and the other gaijin scum to some meeting thing. There was a whole bunch of other gaijin from other companies there and I got talking to a group that were hanging together. They'd all met up in one of the ninja place (The HQ maybe - whatever it's called). They trained for a bit and quit in disgust and moved onto other arts. Now, it was a long time ago (1999 - 2000) so bear that in mind. What I do remember was that they told me they thought the whole thing was a scam and Hatsumi was a freak and a con artist. They went onto tell me that as well as crappy training and loads of dodgy stuff the school was full of fat foreigners. Not one (or very few) of the lower ranks were Japanese. IIRR, The only Japanese that were there were the teachers.
It just all sounded really suspicious to me. Martial arts tourism me thinks.

As soon as you have a circle of people agreeing that grabbing isn't effective in martial arts, well, fuck man, I don't know what you're talking about anymore. You look at every single natural predator and yeah, grabbing is badass.
If ninjutsu didn't perpetuate the wise old Mr. Miyagi stereotype so well, and allow so many people to adopt a condescending attitude so quickly, the dojo halls would be empty.

After trying just a minimal amount of weapons stuff, id saying grabbing it context dependent. although i now have a video of myself to show folks when they say that BJJ doesnt work with weapons. i did a "stupid" ground to standing sweep straight into a back take on just on reflex and my BJJ training history suuucks.

I like the context dependent angle. Can totally recognize how grabbing a spear or a dude with a knife would be a bad idea. I dislike the use of 'well we train to attack people with weapons' as a reason to ignore basic martial arts techniques. I think it's another bluff to hide behind, similar to the 'we train too deadly,' in that it places claims beyond reasonable testing. Not that demonstrating them against a HEMA dude or kendoka would be all that impossible.

to be fair, from what i read, i don't quite think the way it's supposed to be approached is "grabbing is bad, mm'kay?", but rather from grabbing, which is the natural way to do it effectively, they SUPPOSEDLY have to refine the motion so that they can get the same effect from a nudge or from friction in their predetermined training exercises. but then they don't, because people are fucking dumb, and on top of that they miscommunicate all the bloody time because lol ninja secrets, which leads to more dumb, repeat ad nauseum. end result they can't even grab and then judo people beat them up

People say that? Just look at the Dog Brothers. Half their grappling or more is from BJJ. But it depends what you are trying to pull off. Obviously doing a double leg against a guy with a knife is doable but a bit risky; or getting trapped in someone's guard when they have a knife could end up with you in a mess (still doable). Controlling the weapon arm with a two on one and sweeping etc is a different story. If you can't grapple with a weapon why would the Filipinos practice dumog? I hate that "you can't do this, can't do that" crap in MA. Sometimes you just don't get a fucking choice and have to make do with what you are given and using the skills that you have. Really worth watching the Dog Brothers DVD Die Less Often.
