Apologies for the delay guys.
Between the two barmen and a couple of other guests you hear a mishmash or rumours. Naturally people are talking about the firefights that were happening throughout the day but no one seems agreed on what the cause was. Some say it was Legion, some say it was normal fiend bandits getting uppity and having a pop, someone claims a group of deathclaws came down from the mountain, and yet another person claims to have seen a squad of the Brotherhood of Steel further up past the camp. There's also some interest about you guys. You were seen being escorted up to the camp and Boniface was seen being taken to the aid tent. Naturally people have some questions about you and your business but the people have travelled enough to know not to be too pushy about it.
The one thing everyone agrees on though: Bandits, deathclaws, or irradiated geckos, the NCR are losing. You hear that there are two patrols that still haven't been heard from. Both patrols were travelling South. Off of that, you hear recommendations to take a different route out of the camp if your trip is taking you that way.
Other than that, you hear a smattering of other camp gossip: A child was kidnapped from a farmhouse nearby and people are blaming the fiends. With the rumours of Legion in the area some are thinking they've sent patrols to take slaves. That being the case, some are hoping she's already dead.
You hear about some problems the rest stop's been having with a thief. Nothing huge so far, just people noticing odds and ends missing from their caravans or their tents. There's no logic to what's been reported missing and kids are being suspected. There's a couple kicking about and the rest stop is wonderfully short of distractions for young people without an interest in drinking, gambling or fighting.
The conversation dries up as people start leaving for their tents or their sleeping bags. The only real group left is the few remnants of the caravan table who still have money left to play. As the watch changed a couple of sentries found themselves seats and ordered drinks but they don't seem in the mood for talking.

Morning glooms!!!!
Or, whatever morning does.
You all settle at a table by the bar for breakfast (Boniface was allowed out of the medical tent to join you) and as you nommle on fried bread and some form of meat, you're forced to discuss a dilemma. The plan had been to simply follow the main route south out of New Vegas and down to Novac, but the gentlepeople at the bar told you a lot of fighting had been going on that way. How serious it actually was, who was to blame, and what threat remains you're unsure of however. If you don't follow that route you will have to instead head West out of the rest stop and follow a longer road around to Novac. That trip isn't danger free either however. Having a brahmin with you means you're unable to cut across country as easily and following the road west will bring you closer to known areas where the Powder Gangers operate. You haven't heard much about them in the last couple of weeks though and no one seems sure what their current status is.
Soooo ya'll have a choice. Go south, take the quick road and risk whatever problems the NCR were dealing with, or go west, take a longer route, and risk getting into it with the Powder Gangers

boniface votes for the quick route. maybe more dangerous, but we don't actually know what's up with the gangers, so it may even be worse. plus, if we run into trouble halfway through and have to turn back, it's also less distance along which to retreat before reaching a safe haven.

Will nods his head in agreement. "Let's take the quicker route. The sooner we are done with this job the better. but how about taking a look for that missing kid? It might put us in good standing with the locals".
OoC: side quests!!

If you'd like side quests we can do that. I was hesitant to add too much to the rumour stuff since I didn't know where this was going. By that I mean this was meant to be a quick thing until Sloth came back but that doesn't look like its going to happen anytime soon so I'm fine with adding side quests and widening this beyond "stay on road from A to B"

In that case...
You find the barman from the previous night and he gives you the direction of the home the girl went missing from. Chet will stay behind to look after the brahmin, and you toddle on your merry way. The girl's family live in a small farmhouse a little ways away from the rest stop. The building is large by most peoples' standards, but one corner of it has been reduced to rubble at some point in time and the wall has been replaced with a few sheets of corrugated iron. A couple of goats and a brahmin are penned a short distance from the house, grazing happily on some grass. Behind the pen you can see a man crouched down tending to a small vegetable garden.

He throws a pitchfork at you.
Nah
The man jumps at your voice and turns to face you. His face is a haggard mess that belies his last few days of crying and not sleeping. He seems very on edge as he eyes the heavily armed men standing in front of him, but he manages to ask what you want.
